The Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta ran across two weekends in August 2026 and has concluded. This page stays up as the mode's history and a "what carried over" reference.
The Two Weekends
| Weekend | Dates | Access | Content |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early access | August 6–10, 2026 | Pre-orders + Game Pass Ultimate / PC Game Pass | Horde Siege (Golden Quarter) + Versus (added after feedback) |
| Free open | August 13–17, 2026 | Everyone — no purchase, no subscription | Same content; progress carried between weekends |
What Was Testable
- Horde Siege on the Golden Quarter map — classes, Tactical Gear, Invasion events, extraction finale
- Versus 4v4: Team Deathmatch and Conquest on Market and Outpost
- The new movement system under real server load — the beta was the first mass test of the A/LS/Y control scheme
- Cosmetic earn track: challenge-based rewards with no battle pass; everything earned carries to launch
The Versus Reversal
The first weekend was originally announced as Horde Siege only. After days of community pushback across Reddit and X — buyers reasonably expected the full multiplayer suite — The Coalition added Versus days before launch of the beta with a blunt message: "We hear you. We acted." The Versus client went up for pre-download.
Community read: rare responsiveness this close to a beta, and a good sign for post-launch listening — but also a hint that some Versus playlist details were still being finalized that week.
How the Beta Was Received
- Mostly positive, one clear split: Horde Siege was widely praised — GamesRadar called it brilliant when squads collide in the dense city, weaker when apart
- The movement system divided the community exactly along the wall-bounce fault line — see /gameplay/movement-cover.html
- Critics' consensus from beta/hands-on coverage: gunplay and weight are the best the series has felt; the prequel story split reviewers
What Comes Next
- No further public tests are scheduled before launch
- Beta progression and cosmetics carry to the full game for participants
- The next milestone is the October 1 Premium early-access window — see /release/editions.html
