For twenty years, Gears movement was one contextual A button. E-Day blows that up — and it's the change every preview leads with.
The New Control Scheme
| Action | Old (Gears 1–5) | E-Day |
|---|---|---|
| Take / move around cover | A (contextual) | A — fully dedicated |
| Sprint (roadie run) | A (contextual) | Left-stick click (LS) |
| Vault / mantle | A (contextual) | Y |
| Jump | Not possible | Y — a series first |
IGN's Michael Higham after ~10 hours in the beta: rewiring took time, "but once I acclimated with the new controls, I couldn't really go back." The context-switching that used to misfire in panic moments is gone.
What the New Movement Unlocks
- Slide from a sprint — under obstacles, around corners, into cover
- Jump and mantle — rooftops, collapsed floors, high flanks; maps no longer have to be flat
- Low-ground cover — drop prone behind low walls and debris
- Climbing over vehicles and structures — which the Locust AI can do too (see /gameplay/combat-system.html)
The campaign repurposes the same verbs for traversal: Kalona's realistically-scaled districts are navigated with slides and mantles rather than open-world fast travel. IGN's verdict: "a linear game set in a non-linear city."
The Wall-Bounce Question
Wall bouncing — the high-skill rhythm of bouncing between cover with a Gnasher — still exists. What changed is the balance around it:
- Bounces take longer to execute, making them readable and punishable (IGN LATAM: the Gears 5-era bounce meta "no longer works as effectively")
- A wider sprint camera shows more of the arena, letting you react to bouncers earlier
- The beta community reaction was split exactly along old fault lines: veterans posted "Gears of War is truly back" montages; casual players called it "tryhards abusing movement exploits... casual gaming is dead"
The debate is 17 years old and E-Day restarted it on purpose. The Coalition's own answer to "is it casual-friendly" is the readable-bounce redesign — whether that lands is the thing to watch in reviews.
Questions
Can you jump in Gears of War: E-Day?
Yes — a first for the series. Jump/vault is Y by default.
Did they remove wall bouncing?
No. Bouncing still works, but it's slower to execute and easier to read — a deliberate balance change against the Gears 5-era bounce meta.
Is E-Day good for casual players?
The redesign (dedicated buttons, readable bounces, wider sprint camera) is aimed exactly at that complaint. Community verdict so far: split, and loud.
What are the default controls?
A = cover, LS = sprint, Y = jump/vault, with remapping available.
